by Elena Taltavull |

The magical plant known by the ancient Egyptians as  the plant of eternity, has been used for it's health benefits and skincare results as far back as 6000 years ago.

Aloe was regarded as a sacred plant the “blood” of which held the secrets to beauty, health and immortality used by both Cleopatra and Nefertiti.

Alexander the Great employed the use of aloe juice to heal the war wounds to his warriors and in Japan it was known as the “royal plant”.

In the Indian ayurvedic medicine, aloe is used in numerous applications such as rejuvenating remedies,  and is regarded as the plant of balance between pitta, kapha and vata . One of very few plants that hold these qualities!

As a cosmetic ingredient, aloe vera is widely used in many mainstream skincare and cosmetics’ products.

It's a terrific skin-friendly plant,  and has a low risk of causing allergies, sensitivity or skin reactions.

As you know, Alow it is used in many after sun gels. Known as “burn plant” ,  it is so effective in soothing sunburns. It's components encourage skin repair and cell regeneration. A key paint relieving compound  gives a much needed soothing sensation after a day in the sun and aloin, prevents the peeling that sometimes occurs after sun exposure.

Aloe Vera is a super ingredient for sensitive skin and can help soothing redness, infection, rash, and itchiness.

Because Aloe Vera contains mostly (95%) of water, it hydrates the skin like no other ingredient, leaving a very light feeling on the skin after application. leaving the skin smoother, softer and plump. If you a looking for a light product, choose an aloe vera based formulation.

For all of you suffering from acne, aloe fights and prevents the reproduction of the bacteria that is responsible for the occurrence of certain types of acne. f

To help with ageless beauty, it can help maintain elasticity as it retains the skin’s lost moisture and restores its radiance, repairing skin cells.

Used as part of our skincare ritual in the evenings, aloe vera based products will help you cleanse the day away, washing pollution build up is used as a cleanser, replenishing lost hydration if used as a gel or cream.

let me share a couple of personal tricks that I use at home, when I feel like whipping a little home remedy.

If my skin feels a little dry and I am in need of a plumping remedy, I mix a table spoon of aloe vera gel, honey and peeled cucumber.  Wash your face to ensure the mixture doesn't absorb impurities, apply to the face and relax for 20 minutes. Just rinse with warm water and feel the difference in your skin.

If you are feeling a little excess oil in your skin,  mix aloe vera gel and tea trea oil. Whip it up and apply to a clean face before you go to bed. Dont forget to protect your pillow. Rinse in the morning with warm water

And the ultimate home exfoliator, one of my absolute favourite concoctions.

Mix a table spoon of grounded coffee and a table spoon of aloe vera gel. Blend until it makes a paste. Apply to the face and move the tips of your fingers in circular motion to remove dead skin cells. Leave it on for 15 minutes to get the hydrating benefits of the aloe and rinse well.

It will wake your skin up and you will look radiant.

When choosing aloe vera skincare, look out for the following:

  • The highest percentage of aloe vera gel
  • The lowest amount of added ingredients
  • If any added ingredients, they should be non-toxic
  • Organic

I must say that additives are a must if we want any formulation to last for more than a couple of days and in fact, but look for non toxic preservatives (often non-toxic) like citric acid, Potassium sorbate to keep pure Aloe Vera gel from molding, Xanthan gum and vitamin C

Avoid ingredients like

  • sodium benzoate
  • Carrageenan
  • Parabens
  • Sulfates
  • propylene glycol
  • Triclosan
  • Phthalates
  • Petrochemicals

Enjoy all the benefits of this fabulous plant and send us comments and pictures of your fabulous skin.
